Computer Won’t Turn On? Try These Fixes First
A computer that won’t power on isn’t always a dead computer. Before you start shopping for a replacement, there are several quick checks that resolve the problem more often than you’d expect. Here’s the same troubleshooting sequence our technicians use when a “dead” machine comes into the shop.
Step 1: Verify the Power Source
It sounds obvious, but this is genuinely where most no-power issues begin:
- Test the wall outlet — plug in a lamp or phone charger to confirm power is flowing
- Check every cable connection — follow the power cord from the outlet to the back of your PC or laptop
- Inspect the power strip — make sure it’s switched on and hasn’t tripped its internal breaker
Laptop Users: Check the Power Adapter
Most adapters have a small LED indicator — if it’s dark while plugged in, the adapter itself may have failed. Run your hand along the cable and check for kinks, exposed wiring, or bulges. If you smell burnt plastic, unplug it immediately.

Step 2: Perform a Power Drain Reset
Electronic components can hold residual charge that prevents the system from starting. A power drain clears this stored energy and forces the hardware to initialize fresh.
- Unplug the power cord. For laptops with removable batteries, take the battery out.
- Disconnect all peripherals — mouse, keyboard, USB drives, monitors, everything.
- Press and hold the power button for 30 full seconds.
- Reconnect only the power cord (and battery), then try powering on.
This single step brings a surprising number of “dead” machines back to life.
Step 3: Disconnect All Peripherals
A shorted USB device can prevent your computer from powering on entirely. Disconnect everything:
- Printers and scanners
- USB hubs and thumb drives
- External hard drives
- Webcams and microphones
- Even your keyboard and mouse for this test
If the computer starts with everything disconnected, plug devices back in one at a time. The one that causes the failure is your culprit.
Step 4: Read the Diagnostic Signals
When a computer can’t fully boot, it often communicates through beep codes or LED patterns:
- Blinking LED patterns — a sequence like “two amber, one white” on a Dell points to a specific component failure
- Beep sequences — short and long beeps at startup indicate issues with RAM, CPU, or the graphics card
- Fans spin but no display — typically points to a RAM, graphics card, or motherboard issue
Write down the exact pattern. You can look up your manufacturer’s beep code chart online, or bring that information to a technician — it dramatically speeds up diagnosis. Microsoft’s support documentation covers POST (Power-On Self-Test) codes in detail.
Step 5: Internal Checks (Desktops Only)
Skip this if your machine is under warranty or if it’s a laptop.
Reseat the RAM
Memory sticks can shift slightly from heat expansion or vibration. Open the side panel, release the clips on each RAM stick, remove them, and firmly click them back into place. A loose RAM module is one of the most common causes of a “lights on, nobody home” situation.
Replace the CMOS Battery
The small coin-cell battery (CR2032) on your motherboard keeps BIOS settings alive when the PC is off. These last 3-5 years. A dead CMOS battery can cause boot failures, clock resets, and BIOS configuration errors. Replacements cost about $3.
When to Call a Professional
If you’ve worked through every step above and the machine still won’t start, the issue likely involves a failed component that requires diagnostic equipment:
- You smell something burnt inside the case
- The machine powers on briefly then immediately shuts off
- You see bulging or leaking capacitors on the motherboard
- The problem started after a power surge or lightning strike
